Neo-Brutalism

Flat bright fills boxed in thick black outlines with hard offset shadows, chunky heavy type and tilted sticker labels, like a toy-coloured interface drawn with a marker.

Moods
bold, playful, rebellious, friendly
Suits
saas, devtools, ai, ecommerce, agency, education
Type
Archivo Black + Space Grotesk

Principles

  • Outline everything that holds content in a 3 px black border; no hairlines, no borderless cards
  • Give boxes and buttons a hard offset shadow (no blur, solid ink, down-right); never a soft shadow
  • Fill blocks with flat bright colours from the palette; no gradients, no transparency, no photos without a frame
  • Set headlines in a chunky weight (800–900) at large steps; let them crowd their boxes
  • Tilt one or two sticker labels per screen (−6° to 6°); everything else sits square on the grid

Hard rules

  • No hairline (1 px) borders, no borderless floating cards, no dividers made of faint grey lines.
  • No soft, blurred or coloured shadows, no glows, no glass or backdrop blur, no gradients of any kind.
  • No light font weights (under 500) anywhere except long body copy; never thin display type.
  • No three equal feature cards in a row; feature cards run two per row, testimonials as a masonry wall.
  • No more than one `accent`-filled block per screen; the rest is white, yellow and stickers.
  • No muted, desaturated or pastel-grey palettes; colours stay flat and saturated.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Neo-Brutalism owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Give every container that holds content (cards, tiles, strips, form fields, buttons, image frames) a solid border at `tokens.border.width` (3 px) in the `border` colour (black in light mode).
  • Give bordered boxes and buttons a hard offset shadow: `box-shadow: 6px 6px 0 0 var(--border)` for boxes, `4px 4px 0 0` for buttons and chips. No blur, no spread, always down-right.
  • On hover, buttons and clickable cards move 2 px down-right and the shadow shrinks by the same amount (they "press"); on active, the shadow disappears. Respect `prefers-reduced-motion` by changing colour only.
  • Fill boxes with flat palette roles only: `surface` (white) for most cards, `accent` for the one loud block per screen, `accent2` for stickers and belts, `surfaceAlt` (yellow) for fields and footers.
  • Set headlines in the heading face at the face's heaviest weight with tight tracking; hero headlines at step 6–8, section titles at step 4.
  • Use the radius token (8 px) on every box, button, field and frame — the same radius everywhere, never pills except nav pills and tag chips.
  • Tilt at most two sticker labels per screen between −6° and 6° (`rotate` in layout.json); a sticker is a small bordered label with a coloured fill.
  • Use filled geometric marks from the layout (squares as checkboxes, stars and circles as decoration) in palette colours with the same black outline.
  • Put images inside bordered frames with the offset shadow; illustrations and flat product shots suit the style better than moody photography.
  • At 375 px keep the borders and shadows at full weight, stack columns in source order, shrink display type to step 5 and hide decorative stars and circles.

Don't

  • No rotated body copy, no rotated buttons, no rotation beyond ±6°.
  • No icon-font grids or emoji used as feature icons; use the layout's filled shapes or nothing.

Heroes (4)

Sticker board

hero.neobrutal-sticker-board · hero

Rule
A white bordered board on 1–7 carries the headline and buttons; a framed image with an offset shadow sits on 8–12 with a tilted sticker label overlapping its foot.
Slots
eyebrow, headline, subhead, cta, cta2, heroImage, meta
Grid
board 1-7 · image 8-12 · sticker 8-11 · star 11-12
Notes
The board and the image both carry the hard offset shadow. The sticker is the one tilted element; the star is decoration and hides at phone width.

A white bordered "board" (surface fill, 3 px border, hard shadow) spans columns 1–7 over two grid rows and holds: eyebrow (bold, uppercase), headline at step 6 heaviest weight (max ~12 characters per line), lead subhead, then a row with a medium primary button (arrow) and a medium secondary button. Columns 8–12 hold a 4:5 illustration in an offset-shadow frame. A sticker label (accent2 fill, bordered, rotated −5°) sits in 8–11 on the second row, overlapping the image's foot. A filled accent star (lg, rotated 14°) pins the image's top-right corner in 11–12 and hides at phone width. Phone: board, image, sticker.

App window

hero.neobrutal-app-window · hero

Rule
The hero is one big bordered 'window' on a yellow field: a title bar with three dot buttons, then the headline on 1–8 and the action column on 9–12 inside it.
Slots
eyebrow, headline, subhead, cta, meta
Grid
titlebar full · headline 1-8 · action 9-12
Notes
Section background is surfaceAlt (the yellow field); the window is surface with a 3px border and the hard shadow. Title-bar dots are three small circles.

The section background is the yellow `surfaceAlt` field. One large bordered window (surface fill, hard shadow) fills the grid: a title bar with a bottom border holds three small filled circles (accent, accent2, bg — like window buttons) on the left and the eyebrow in mono on the right. Inside the window the headline runs 1–8 at step 7, heaviest weight; the action column 9–12 is bottom-aligned with the subhead, a medium primary button and a small muted meta line. Phone: title bar stays one row, then headline, then actions.

Colour slabs

hero.neobrutal-colour-slabs · hero

Rule
Two touching bordered slabs: the pink headline slab on 1–8 and a yellow side slab on 9–12 with a star, the subhead and a meta line; a marquee belt closes the hero.
Slots
eyebrow, headline, cta, subhead, meta, tagline
Grid
slab 1-8 · side 9-12 · belt full
Notes
The slabs share their borders (no gap). The marquee belt is a full-width accent2 band directly against the slabs' bottom border; it stops under prefers-reduced-motion.

Two slabs share borders with no gap. Slab one (1–8) is accent-filled with onAccent text: eyebrow, headline at step 7 heaviest weight, and a large secondary button, all bottom-aligned. Slab two (9–12) is the yellow `surfaceAlt` fill: a big accent2 star (rotated −10°, hidden on phone), the lead subhead and a mono meta line, spread top to bottom. Under both, a full-bleed marquee belt in accent2, directly against the slabs' bottom border, carries the tagline in h3 weight. The hero is full-bleed.

Tag pile

hero.neobrutal-tag-pile · hero

Rule
A huge uppercase headline across 1–12 with a filled circle tucked behind its end, then a row of bordered tag chips, then subhead 1–6 and two buttons on 8–12.
Slots
headline, facts[3..5], subhead, cta, cta2
Grid
headline 1-12 · blob 9-12 · tags 1-12 · subhead 1-6 · actions 8-12
Notes
The circle sits in the same cell as the headline, behind its last word. Tags are small bordered chips with the hard shadow; at phone width they scroll sideways.

A filled accent circle (xl) sits in 9–12 behind the end of the headline. The headline spans 1–12 at step 8, heaviest weight, uppercase, tight leading, max ~16 characters per line. Below it a row of 3–5 small bordered tag chips (bold label text, surface fill, small hard shadow). Then the subhead (lead) on 1–6 and two large buttons (primary + ghost) right-aligned on 8–12. Phone: the circle hides, chips scroll sideways.

Columns 6–12: 4–7 separate bordered rows with gaps between them; each row holds a filled accent2 square (the checkbox), a bold h4 title with a small line under it, and a mono tag on the right (hidden on phone). For about and article pages. The h1 (step 6, heaviest weight) spans 1–8; a bordered accent2 callout box on 9–12, bottom-aligned, holds the statement in bold lead type rotated 2°. Body copy then runs in two columns (1–6 and 7–12), max 58 ch each.

How we think

Most rebrands fail because they start with a logo. Ours start with a sales call recording and a spreadsheet of lost deals.

Each engagement starts with a two-week audit: interviews with customers, sales and the people who build the product. The brief writes itself after that.

We hand over everything — source files, a living brand system and a website your team can edit without calling us.
