Risograph Print

A small-press zine run through a risograph: two or three fluorescent spot inks on off-white stock, overprinted shapes and duotone photos, slightly misregistered heavy type and mono captions.

Moods
playful, raw, bold, rebellious, warm
Suits
media, music, events, crafts, food, agency
Type
Bricolage Grotesque + Work Sans

Principles

  • Print with two or three spot inks only: accent, accent2 and the ink colour; every image is a duotone in those inks
  • Overprint on purpose: let shapes, photos and headlines overlap on explicit grid rows, never in tidy separate boxes
  • Misregister the type: big uppercase headlines tilt a degree or two and carry a slight offset ghost in the second ink
  • Lay pages out like a zine — contents pages, spreads, tear-off tabs, mono captions and page numbers
  • Keep it flat: square corners, printed rules and borders, grain instead of gradients or shadows

Hard rules

  • No gradients, glows, soft shadows or blur — the only shadow is the hard `offset-shadow` frame on a photo, offset in a spot ink.
  • No full-colour photographs and no more than three inks on a page (paper doesn't count).
  • No rounded corners, pills or circular avatars; circles appear only as solid ink shapes.
  • No thin, light or italic body type; no centred paragraphs.
  • No icon sets, emoji, glassmorphism or 3D renders.
  • No three identical feature cards in a row — features are boxed in a staggered masonry beside a solid ink block.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Risograph Print owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Use only the spot inks: `accent`, `accent2` and the text colour. Every photograph is a `duotone` of two of them (CSS: grayscale image + `mix-blend-mode: multiply` over an ink fill, or an SVG duotone filter).
  • Overlap on purpose: place shapes, photos and headlines on the explicit `rowSpan`s given in `layout.json` so they overprint; set `mix-blend-mode: multiply` on the upper layer (light mode).
  • Misregister display type: headlines get `text-shadow: 3px 2px 0 var(--accent2)` (or `accent`) and tilt by the `rotate` value in the tree (−2° to −4°).
  • Set display and h1–h3 in uppercase at the heaviest weight with tight leading; set eyebrows, captions, page numbers and meta in the mono font.
  • Add a paper-grain overlay to the whole page: a fixed, pointer-events-none SVG `feTurbulence` noise at 6–10 % opacity.
  • Use printed rules and borders (`border` token, 2 px solid ink) for boxes, lists and dividers; a 4 px rule under the masthead and above the footer.
  • Number things like a zine: issue numbers, contents page numbers, item numbers in the link colour.
  • Keep square corners on everything, including buttons and form fields.
  • At 375 px: stack in source order, keep tilts at half the angle, hide decorative shapes marked `mobile: hide`, keep the grain.

Don't

  • No pure-black text on pure-white; use the warm paper `bg` and the generated ink `text`.
  • Never tilt body copy, forms or buttons — only display type, prices and stickers tilt.

Overprint poster

hero.risograph-overprint-poster · hero

Rule
A spot-colour circle fills 7–12, a landscape duotone photo in 2–8 overprints it, and the uppercase headline (step 6) overprints the circle below the photo across 1–12, tilted −2°. Subhead and CTA bottom-right in 9–12.
Slots
eyebrow, heroImage, headline, subhead, cta
Grid
circle 7-12 · photo 2-8 · headline 1-12 · action 9-12
Notes
Rows are explicit so the three layers overlap: circle rows 1–4, photo rows 2–3, headline rows 4–5 (it overprints the circle, never the photo). Use mix-blend-mode: multiply on the photo and headline to fake overprinting; misregister the headline with a 3 px accent2 text-shadow.

Three layers on explicit rows: a solid `accent` circle filling 7–12 across rows 1–4, a landscape 3:2 duotone photograph with an offset-shadow frame in 2–8 across rows 2–3, and the uppercase headline (step 6, heaviest weight, ≤16 ch, rotate −2°) across 1–12 on rows 4–5, below the photo, so it overprints the circle but never the photo. The mono eyebrow sits top-left in 1–5; on row 6 the subhead and arrowed primary button sit right in 9–12. Multiply-blend the photo and headline. Phone: eyebrow, photo, headline, subhead, button; the circle hides.

Zine spread

hero.risograph-zine-spread · hero

Rule
An opened zine: the left page (1–6) holds a giant issue number and the uppercase headline; a vertical rule in column 7 is the spine; the right page (8–12) holds a duotone 3:4 photo, subhead and CTA.
Slots
index, headline, meta, heroImage, subhead, cta
Grid
left 1-6 · spine 7-7 · right 8-12
Notes
Both pages are the same height; the issue number is in the link colour at step 8. The spine hides at phone width and the pages stack.

An open zine: left page 1–6 holds the issue number (step 8, link colour), the uppercase h1 (step 6, ≤12 ch) and a mono meta line, spaced top to bottom; column 7 holds a 2 px vertical rule as the spine; the right page 8–12 holds a duotone 3:4 photograph, the subhead and a secondary button. Both pages are the same height. Phone: the spine hides, pages stack.

Stamp stack

hero.risograph-stamp-stack · hero

Rule
Two headline lines stamped at offset spans — 1–9 in ink, 4–12 in the spot colour — with a star sticker tilted in 10–12 and the subhead plus CTA tucked under in 1–6.
Slots
headline, tagline, subhead, cta
Grid
line1 1-9 · line2 4-12 · sticker 10-12 · action 1-6
Notes
The second line is the tagline set as a continuation of the headline, in the link colour. The star sticker carries no text and hides at phone width.

Line one: the headline at step 7, uppercase, in 1–9. A tilted `accent2` star sticker sits in 10–12 on the same row. Line two: the tagline at step 6, uppercase (upright), in the link colour, offset to 4–12 so it reads as a second stamp. Below, in 1–6: subhead and a primary button. No photograph.

Halftone banner

hero.risograph-halftone-banner · hero

Rule
A full-bleed band in accent2: a 21:9 duotone photo across 1–12 with the uppercase headline overprinting its lower edge in 2–11, tilted −3°; subhead and CTA under it in 2–7, mono meta in 10–12.
Slots
heroImage, headline, subhead, cta, meta
Grid
photo 1-12 · headline 2-11 · subhead 2-7 · meta 10-12
Notes
All text on the band uses onAccent2. Add a halftone dot pattern (CSS radial-gradient at 4 px) over the photo. Only the headline's first line overlaps the photo (a pull-up of about one line height); the empty row-1 box in the tree only sizes that overlap and is not built.

Full-bleed `accent2` band. A 21:9 duotone photograph spans 1–12 over rows 1–2 with a 4 px halftone dot overlay; the headline (step 7, uppercase, onAccent2, rotate −3°) spans 2–11 on rows 2–3 so only its first line prints over the photo's bottom edge (the rest sits on the band, so dark image areas never hide the type). Row 4: subhead and secondary button in 2–7, mono meta bottom- aligned in 10–12. All text on the band uses `onAccent2`.
