Neo-grotesk Minimal

Quiet contemporary minimalism: one neo-grotesk family at modest sizes, tiny uppercase labels, hairline rules and wide fields of white with content pushed to the right half.

Moods
minimal, calm, cool, technical
Suits
saas, devtools, ai, fintech, architecture, portfolio
Type
Geist

Principles

  • Use one neo-grotesk family for everything; vary weight between 400 and 500 only
  • Keep type small: headlines at steps 3–5, labels tiny, uppercase and tracked
  • Leave most of the page empty; push content to the right half and corners of the 12-column grid
  • Separate with 1 px hairlines only; no fills, frames or shadows
  • Spend colour once per screen: one small link or figure in the accent, everything else in greys

Hard rules

  • No display sizes above step 5, no weights above 500.
  • No second typeface, no serif, no italics for emphasis.
  • No cards, filled panels, coloured section backgrounds or shadows.
  • No gradients, glows, blur, illustrations or icons.
  • No centred hero or centred section titles.
  • No three-card feature rows; features are a ruled spec sheet.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Neo-grotesk Minimal owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Use the heading font for everything (heading and body are the same family); weights 400 and 500 only, mono for dates and numbers.
  • Keep headlines between steps 3 and 5 and section titles at steps 1–2; body at `tokens.base` (15 px).
  • Set labels at step −1, uppercase, tracking 0.08em or wider, in the muted colour.
  • Leave the columns the spans leave empty — usually the left half (columns 3–6) — and keep section padding at `tokens.space.section` (168 px).
  • Use 1 px hairlines in the border colour to separate rows and to open blocks.
  • Use the accent colour for one element per screen: a text link, a figure or the focus ring.
  • Photograph products and objects on flat neutral surfaces; square or 2 px corners, no frames.
  • At 375 px keep 20 px side margins, stack flush left and keep labels tiny.

Don't

  • No display sizes above step 5, no weights above 500.
  • No second typeface, no serif, no italics for emphasis.
  • No cards, filled panels, coloured section backgrounds or shadows.
  • No gradients, glows, blur, illustrations or icons.
  • No centred hero or centred section titles.
  • No three-card feature rows; features are a ruled spec sheet.
  • No large buttons; actions are small text links or small outlined buttons.
  • No dense pages: never more than one block of content per viewport height on desktop.

Heroes (4)

Quiet corner

hero.neo-grotesk-quiet-corner · hero

Rule
Tiny labels in the top corners, a deliberate empty band, then a modest headline (step 5, weight 500) bottom-right on 7–12 over a hairline and a three-part base line.
Slots
eyebrow, meta, headline, subhead, cta, address
Grid
label 1-3 · meta 10-12 · headline 7-12 · subhead 1-3 · cta 7-8 · address 10-12
Notes
Most of the hero is empty on purpose. The headline is small for a hero — restraint is the point.

Top row: a tiny uppercase tracked label (step −1) on 1–3 and a tiny muted location/date on 10–12. Then an empty band about 40% of the viewport. The headline sits bottom-right on 7–12 at step 5, weight 500, tight tracking, max ~24 ch. A hairline across the grid, then the base line: subhead in small type on 1–3, an underlined small CTA on 7–8, the muted address (or one fact) on 10–12 — never a caption without an image. At phone width the top labels stay at the top, the empty band takes whatever height is left, and the headline block stacks flush left at the bottom.

Rule
A short headline (step 4) on 1–5 and a small subhead on 7–10 with a text link on 11–12, above a full-width 21:9 product plate with a tiny caption.
Slots
headline, subhead, cta, heroImage
Grid
headline 1-5 · subhead 7-10 · cta 11-12 · plate 1-12

Text row first: headline at step 4, weight 500, on 1–5; subhead in body size on 7–10 (max 44 ch); a small text link with arrow bottom-aligned on 11–12. Then a 21:9 plate across the full grid — a product shot or object on a flat surface colour, no shadow, no device frame — with a tiny caption under its left edge. At phone width the plate becomes 4:3 and sits last.

Baseline

hero.neo-grotesk-baseline · hero

Rule
Four tiny labels across the top (1–3, 4–6, 7–9, 10–12); the headline sits alone at the bottom of the hero at step 5, weight 400, one or two lines.
Slots
eyebrow, meta, address, cta, headline
Grid
label1 1-3 · label2 4-6 · label3 7-9 · label4 10-12 · headline full

Top: four tiny labels in a row on the quarter lines — eyebrow, meta, the address and a small text CTA — all at step −1. The rest of the hero (about 60% of the viewport, so the headline stays above the fold) is empty until the bottom, where the headline sits at step 5, weight 400, tight tracking, max ~28 ch, one or two lines. No image. At phone width the labels wrap two per row.
