Broadsheet Newspaper

A front page on newsprint: a blackletter nameplate between double rules, datelines and ears, bold serif headlines in a strict hierarchy, and dense justified columns split by vertical rules.

Moods
serious, retro, technical, raw
Suits
media, education, legal, finance, nonprofit, events
Type
UnifrakturMaguntia + Newsreader

Principles

  • Set the site name as a blackletter nameplate between double rules; use the blackletter nowhere else but section flags
  • Run text in narrow justified columns separated by 1 px vertical rules; never a single wide column
  • Rank every story with headline size: one lead headline per page, then clearly smaller decks, heads and briefs
  • Date and place everything: datelines, bylines, edition ears and page numbers in small caps or mono
  • Print in ink on newsprint: black type and rules on warm paper, grayscale photographs, one spot colour at most

Hard rules

  • No blackletter for headlines, body text or buttons.
  • No rounded corners, shadows, gradients, cards with fills or coloured section backgrounds (except the surface tone for the coupon and staff box if needed).
  • No colour photography, no illustrations, no icons or emoji.
  • No wide single-column text blocks: nothing over 72 characters per line.
  • No large hero whitespace or airy spacing; sections follow each other tightly (72 px).
  • No pill buttons or filled buttons except the coupon's submit; links are underlined text with an arrow.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Broadsheet Newspaper owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Set the site name as the nameplate: heading (blackletter) face, centred, at step 7 in heroes and at nav size in the rail; always between rules.
  • Draw rules in the `border` colour (ink): 1 px hairlines between items, a 2 px rule to open a section, and a double rule (3 px + 1 px, 2 px apart) under the nameplate and above the imprint where layout.json has a 4 px divider.
  • Separate columns with 1 px vertical rules (`border: left` boxes or `divider` on repeats) and a 20 px gutter; never leave columns floating without rules.
  • Justify body text with `hyphens: auto` and `text-wrap: pretty`; body at 16 px, line-height 1.45, columns 28–46 characters wide.
  • Keep a strict headline ladder: one lead headline per page at step 5 (or a banner at step 7), story heads at step 4, briefs at h4. Headlines use tight leading and no full stop.
  • Put datelines, bylines, page numbers and edition ears in small caps (uppercase, wide tracking) or mono at the small size.
  • Show photographs in grayscale, square-cornered, with an italic caption and a credit under each.
  • Use the spot colour (`accent`/`link`) only for kickers above headlines and one "breaking" label per page.
  • Open the first column of a long story with a three-line drop cap in the body serif, weight 700.
  • At 375 px, collapse columns to one, keep the vertical rules as horizontal hairlines between the stacked columns, keep the nameplate on one line (shrink it to fit) and keep text justified only above 320 px column width (otherwise left-aligned).

Don't

  • No blackletter for headlines, body text or buttons.
  • No rounded corners, shadows, gradients, cards with fills or coloured section backgrounds (except the surface tone for the coupon and staff box if needed).
  • No colour photography, no illustrations, no icons or emoji.
  • No wide single-column text blocks: nothing over 72 characters per line.
  • No large hero whitespace or airy spacing; sections follow each other tightly (72 px).
  • No pill buttons or filled buttons except the coupon's submit; links are underlined text with an arrow.
  • No more than one spot colour, and never as a background fill.
  • No animation beyond hover underlines; the page is printed matter.

Rule
Edition ears and motto, the blackletter nameplate centred between rules, a dateline, then the lead story on 1–8 (headline, deck, photo, two text columns) and an 'In brief' rail on 9–12 behind a vertical rule.

Grid
earLeft 1-3 · motto 5-8 · earRight 10-12 · nameplate full · lead 1-8 · brief 9-12 · subscribe 9-12
Notes
The 4 px divider under the nameplate is drawn as a double rule (3 px + 1 px with a 2 px gap). Body columns are justified with hyphenation.

Top line (ears): volume and number in small caps on 1–3 and the motto in italic centred on 5–8 (both hidden on phone), price or edition in small caps right-aligned on 10–12. A hairline. The nameplate (site name) centred at step 7 in the blackletter face. A double rule. A centred small-caps dateline ("Monday, October 24, 2026 · London"). A hairline. Then the lead story on 1–8: headline in the body serif at step 6 weight 700 (max ~26 ch), an italic deck (lead size), a 16:9 grayscale photo with caption, and the story in two justified columns (1–6, 7–12 of its own grid) whose text differs from the deck. On 9–12, behind a 1 px vertical rule that runs the full height of the lead: a small-caps "In brief" label, 3–5 briefs (h4 head + small text) separated by hairlines, then a 2 px rule and a boxed (1 px) ear with a small-caps line and the small primary CTA.
