Terminal Mono

A dark terminal session as a website: one monospace face, window frames and panes, prompts and flags, ASCII rules and meters, phosphor green or amber on near-black, dense as a man page.

Moods
technical, raw, minimal, retro
Suits
devtools, saas, ai, science, gaming, portfolio
Type
JetBrains Mono

Principles

  • Use one monospace family for everything on a narrow 1.2 scale; hierarchy comes from weight, colour and prefix characters
  • Frame content as terminal windows and panes: 1px rules, a title bar, square corners
  • Write the interface as commands: $ prompts, --flags, [ bracketed ] buttons and ASCII rules and meters
  • Keep it dark and dense: a near-black ground, one phosphor accent, spacing on a 4px unit
  • Hold every text column to an 80-character measure

Hard rules

  • No proportional fonts anywhere, not even for the logo or buttons.
  • No rounded corners, drop shadows, gradients, glows on text or glass panels.
  • No photographs as decoration; images appear only as screenshots inside window frames.
  • No icons or emoji (use characters: `✓`, `×`, `→`, `●` at most).
  • No type larger than step 7 (the ASCII-banner headline alone may reach step 8) and no light weights; a headline is big only in the ASCII-banner hero.
  • No centred layouts; everything is flush left, like a console.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Terminal Mono owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Set every piece of text in the monospace pairing (heading, body and mono are all monospace); use the narrow 1.2 scale and carry hierarchy with weight (400/700), colour (`text`, `textMuted`, `link`) and prefix characters (`$`, `#`, `>`, `--`, `├──`).
  • Hold text to an 80-character measure: no line of copy runs past 80ch, at any width.
  • Frame windows and panes with 1 px rules in the `border` colour (dashed per the token, or solid for window frames); a window has a title bar with the session or file name left and a muted meta right.
  • Write UI as commands: buttons are bracketed (`[ Get started ]`), links may be prefixed with `→` or `./`, eyebrows are prompt lines (`$ cat about.txt`), section headings in man-page capitals (`OPTIONS`, `DESCRIPTION`).
  • Use the accent (`link`) for prompts, flags, version numbers, names in listings and the primary button; everything else is `text` or `textMuted`.
  • Draw meters, trees and dividers with characters: `[||||| ]`, `├──`, `└──`, `────`.
  • Keep spacing tight on the 4 px unit; lists have no gap between rows (like real terminal output).
  • Show a block cursor (`█`) after the hero headline or the email prompt; it blinks at 1 Hz with `steps(2)` and stops under `prefers-reduced-motion`.
  • At 375 px keep monospace, let listings drop their muted columns (`mobile: hide`), scroll long command lines horizontally inside their block rather than wrapping them.

Don't

  • No proportional fonts anywhere, not even for the logo or buttons.
  • No rounded corners, drop shadows, gradients, glows on text or glass panels.
  • No photographs as decoration; images appear only as screenshots inside window frames.
  • No icons or emoji (use characters: `✓`, `×`, `→`, `●` at most).
  • No type larger than step 7 (the ASCII-banner headline alone may reach step 8) and no light weights; a headline is big only in the ASCII-banner hero.
  • No centred layouts; everything is flush left, like a console.
  • No cards with fills for features; features are man-page entries.
  • No more than one accent colour on screen (variants may set accent2 for one syntax-highlight role).

Boot log

hero.terminal-boot-log · hero

Rule
A terminal window on 1–8: a title bar, the headline, a short description, a boot log of [ OK ] lines and two bracketed buttons; beside it on 9–12 a small status pane (title bar + three or four key/value lines, like `uptime`).
Slots
eyebrow, meta, headline, subhead, facts[3..5], cta, cta2, caption, stats[3..4]
Grid
window 1-8 · status 9-12
Notes
Title bar: the session path on the left ("~/acme — zsh — 80×24"), three muted dots or the clock on the right. Each fact renders as "[ OK ] Started …" with the bracket in the accent. Buttons are bracketed: "[ Get started ]".

A terminal window (1 px frame) on 1–8. Title bar: the session path on the left (`~/acme — zsh — 80×24`), a muted meta on the right. Inside, with generous padding: the headline in bold at step 5 (max 40 ch) followed by a block cursor, the description (max 64 ch), a boot log of three to five lines with no gap between them (`[ OK ]` in the accent + a short line), then a bracketed primary button and a ghost button. Beside it on 9–12, top-aligned, a small status pane (1 px frame, a title bar with a muted caption, then three or four `key value` lines with the value in the accent, like `uptime` output). At 375 px the pane drops below the window.

Split panes

hero.terminal-split-panes · hero

Rule
tmux-style panes sharing 1px rules: a large pane on 1–7 with the prompt, headline and CTA; on 8–12 a README pane over a surface pane holding the install command.
Slots

Grid

Notes
Panes touch with a 1-unit gap so their rules read as tmux dividers. The eyebrow is a prompt line ("$ cat intro.txt").

Three tmux panes separated by 1-unit gaps so their rules read as dividers: a large pane on 1–7 (both rows) with a prompt line, the headline (step 6, bold) bottom-aligned, the description and a primary button; on 8–12 a README pane (muted filename, two short paragraphs) above a `surface` pane holding the install command in the accent and a muted caption.
