Memphis

Memphis Group playfulness: clashing pastels with heavy black outlines, confetti triangles, squiggles and dots, tilted stickers and loud chunky type.

Moods
playful, bold, retro, friendly
Suits
food, events, education, crafts, local-business, music
Type
Bricolage Grotesque + DM Sans

Principles

  • Outline everything that has a fill — panels, shapes, images, buttons — in 3 px black
  • Scatter confetti (triangles, circles, crosses, squiggles) around content, never over text
  • Clash the palette on purpose: pink, lime and sky side by side, never in tints of one hue
  • Tilt stickers, labels and some headlines by 2–6°; nothing important is perfectly level
  • Set headlines in a chunky display face at weight 800, short and loud

Hard rules

  • No soft shadows, blur, glass or gradients.
  • No borderless filled panels — if it has a fill, it has an outline.
  • No tints of a single hue; no corporate blues and greys as the main palette.
  • No rotated body paragraphs, form fields or buttons.
  • No thin hairline dividers; use dashed 2 px rules or squiggles.
  • No three identical untilted cards in a row.

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Memphis owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Outline every filled element — panels, buttons, images, shapes, inputs — with a 3 px solid border in the heading colour (`tokens.border`).
  • Give panels, cards and images the hard offset shadow: 6 px right, 6 px down, no blur, heading colour.
  • Draw the `bar` shape as a zig-zag squiggle (SVG polyline, 4 px stroke) and the other shapes flat with outlines.
  • Rotate the elements `layout.json` rotates (stickers, labels, some headlines) by the given degrees; alternate tilts in repeats as the notes say.
  • Use accent (pink), accent2 (lime) and surfaceAlt (sky) side by side as solid fills; text on fills uses the matching on-colour.
  • Use pattern fills — black dots, stripes, small squiggles on a palette colour — for media slots marked `pattern`.
  • Set headlines in the display face at the heaviest weight with tight leading; keep body text calm and level.
  • Animate on hover with a springy wobble (`tokens.motion.easing`), never on scroll; respect prefers-reduced-motion.
  • At 375 px hide scattered confetti, keep one squiggle per section and reduce tilts to ±3° or less.

Don't

  • No soft shadows, blur, glass or gradients.
  • No borderless filled panels — if it has a fill, it has an outline.
  • No tints of a single hue; no corporate blues and greys as the main palette.
  • No rotated body paragraphs, form fields or buttons.
  • No thin hairline dividers; use dashed 2 px rules or squiggles.
  • No three identical untilted cards in a row.
  • No confetti shapes over text or behind paragraphs.
  • No serif faces and no light weights below 400.

Confetti stage

hero.memphis-confetti-stage · hero

Rule
Confetti shapes scattered in the corners (triangle 1–2, ring 11–12, cross 1, half-circle 10–12, squiggle 4–9); a tilted sticker eyebrow, a loud headline on 2–11 and an outlined accent2 box with the lead and CTA on 3–8.

Grid
headline 2-11 · sticker 3-8 · box 3-8 · halfCircle 10-12 · squiggle 4-9
Notes
The bar shape is drawn as a zig-zag squiggle (SVG path, 4 px black stroke). Every shape has a 3 px black outline.

A stage of confetti. Row 1: a triangle (accent, rotated 15°) on 1–2, the eyebrow as a sticker — yellow-ish surfaceAlt fill, 3 px black outline, rotated −4° — on 3–8, and a ring (accent2) on 11–12. Row 2: the headline on 2–11 at step 7, heaviest weight, tight. Row 3: a cross (heading colour) on 1, and on 3–8 an outlined box filled with accent2 holding the lead (onAccent2) and a primary button; a big half-circle (accent, rotated 90°) on 10–12 spanning rows 3–4. Row 4: a squiggle on 4–9. All shapes carry a 3 px black outline. At phone width every shape except the squiggle hides.

Grid
pattern 1-6 · panel 7-12
