Maximalist Collage

A scrapbook wall turned into a website: cut-out photos in mismatched frames piled over each other, fat display type mixed with italics and mono stickers, star and blob shapes, marquees, and every inch used.

Moods
playful, bold, rebellious, warm
Suits
fashion, music, events, food, agency, portfolio
Type
Abril Fatface + Syne

Principles

  • Layer, don't line up: photos, shapes and headlines overlap on explicit grid rows in every hero and gallery
  • Mix three voices in one view: a fat display face, an italic body face and a mono sticker label
  • Give every cut-out a different frame — offset shadow, circle, arch, border — never a uniform thumbnail grid
  • Stick things on: tilted mono labels on solid colour, star, blob and triangle stickers, marquee bands
  • Fill the page densely with tight gaps; empty space is a deliberate pause, used once per page at most

Hard rules

  • No uniform thumbnail grids, no equal-height card rows, no three matching feature cards.
  • No single-family typography, no light weights, no centred paragraphs of body text.
  • No soft shadows, blur, glass or gradients; shadows are hard offsets only.
  • No empty hero: every hero has at least one photo cut-out or two shapes behind the headline.
  • No grey stock-photo look: photos are bright and saturated, or duotone in the palette.
  • Never tilt body paragraphs, forms or buttons; only display type, stickers, prices and captions tilt.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Maximalist Collage owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Place overlapping elements exactly on the `span` and `rowSpan` values in `layout.json`; later children sit on top (raise `z-index` in source order).
  • Use three type voices in every hero and most sections: the heading face (display, weight 400 — the face is already fat), the body face for asides and taglines (italic only when the body face ships one; never a synthesised slant), and the mono face, uppercase, for stickers, labels, prices and dates.
  • Give each photo in a group a different `frame` (offset-shadow, circle, arch, border) exactly as the tree lists; offset shadows are hard, 8–10 px, in the heading colour.
  • Draw borders 3 px solid in the heading colour (not the pale `border` role) on scraps, tickets, notes and postcards.
  • Make stickers: a mono uppercase label with `bg` accent / accent2 / surfaceAlt, 4–8 px padding, tilted by the tree's `rotate` (−6° to 6°).
  • Use solid shapes (`star`, `blob`, `triangle`, `circle`, `square`) as stickers in the accent colours; they never carry text.
  • Run marquees at a slow, steady speed in opposite directions when two are on screen, and stop them under `prefers-reduced-motion`.
  • Keep gaps tight (6–12 px) and sections close (96 px); masonry columns stagger by mixing portrait, square and landscape crops.
  • At 375 px, stack in source order, halve every rotation, hide shapes marked `mobile: hide`, keep the frames and the stickers.
  • Animate with overshoot (`motion.easing`): stickers wobble 2° on hover, buttons pop 4 px.

Don't

  • No uniform thumbnail grids, no equal-height card rows, no three matching feature cards.
  • No single-family typography, no light weights, no centred paragraphs of body text.
  • No soft shadows, blur, glass or gradients; shadows are hard offsets only.
  • No empty hero: every hero has at least one photo cut-out or two shapes behind the headline.
  • No grey stock-photo look: photos are bright and saturated, or duotone in the palette.
  • Never tilt body paragraphs, forms or buttons; only display type, stickers, prices and captions tilt.
  • No more than two marquees on one screen, and never a marquee of body text.
  • Don't let overlaps hide text: a headline may cross photos and shapes, but never another text block.

Pile-up

hero.maximalist-pileup · hero

Rule
A pile of cut-outs on explicit rows: a 4:5 photo in 1–5, a circular pattern cut-out in 8–11, a star sticker in 11–12, the step-6 headline across 3–12 printed over both, a tilted mono sticker label, a blob, and the subhead plus two buttons under it.
Slots

Grid
photo 1-5 · disc 8-11 · star 11-12 · headline 3-12 · action 4-9 · tag 10-12
Notes
Rows: photo 1–4, disc 1–2, sticker label 3, headline 3–5, blob 5–6, action 6. The headline sits above the images (z-index) on paper-coloured cut-out strips (bg role behind each line) so it stays legible over photos. Decorative shapes hide on phones.

Explicit rows, 92 vh. A 4:5 photo with an offset shadow in 1–5 (rows 1–4); a circular pattern cut-out in 8–11 (rows 1–2); an accent2 star tilted 15° in 11–12 (row 1); a mono sticker label on accent, tilted −6°, in 7–10 (row 3); the headline at step 6 (weight 400, ≤14 ch) across 3–12 on rows 3–5, printed over the photo on paper-coloured strips (`bg` behind each line, `box-decoration-break: clone`) so it stays legible; an accent blob in 1–3 (rows 5–6); in 4–9 on row 6 the lead and two large buttons; a mono meta sticker on surfaceAlt tilted 4° in 10–12. Phone: photo, disc, label, headline, lead, buttons, meta; shapes hide.

Marquee sandwich

hero.maximalist-marquee-sandwich · hero

Rule
Two marquee bands (accent on top, accent2 at the bottom) sandwich the hero: a triangle in 1–2, the step-8 headline in 3–10, a circle in 11–12, then a row of arch-cut photos and the buttons.
Slots

Grid

Notes
Marquees scroll in opposite directions and stop under prefers-reduced-motion.

Full-bleed. An accent marquee band (h3 size, onAccent) on top; then an accent2 triangle tilted −10° in 1–2, the step-8 headline centred in 3–10 and an accent circle in 11–12; then three to five arch-cut 3:4 photos in a row across 2–11 and two large buttons centred under them; an accent2 marquee band (label size) at the bottom running the other way.

Slots

Grid
label 1-5 · headline 2-12 · tagline 1-8 · photo 9-12 · action 1-6
Notes
The tagline is set upright in the body font so three families meet in one block; the circular photo runs down rows 3–5 beside the tagline and subhead.

Row 1: a mono uppercase sticker label on accent2 in 1–5. Row 2: the headline at step 8 across 2–12. Row 3: the tagline in the body face (upright), at step 6, link colour, tilted −3°, in 1–8, with an accent star sticker in 8–9 and a circular photo starting in 9–12 that runs down rows 3–5. Overlap stack

gallery.collage-overlap-stack · gallery

Rule
Four photos with four different frames overlap on explicit rows — offset-shadow 3:4 in 1–5, circle in 4–8, bordered 16:9 in 8–12, arch 4:5 in 9–12 — with a tilted title and a triangle in the gaps.

Grid
a 1-5 · b 4-8 · c 8-12 · d 9-12 · title 1-4 · caption 5-8 · triangle 11-12
Notes
Overlaps are intentional; later items sit on top. On phones the photos stack at full width and the triangle hides.

Four photos, four frames, overlapping on explicit rows: offset-shadow 3:4 in 1–5 (rows 1–3), circle 1:1 in 4–8 (rows 2–5), bordered 16:9 in 8–12 (rows 1–2), arch 4:5 duotone in 9–12 (rows 3–5). The h2 tilted −4° sits in 1–4 on row 6 with a mono caption in 5–8 and an accent2 triangle in 11–12. The title and caption come first in source order, so at phone width the heading leads the stacked photos.
