Editorial Magazine

A printed feature magazine on screen: high-contrast serif display type, an inset reading measure with marginalia, italic deks, pull quotes, drop caps and generous margins.

Moods
elegant, serious, calm, luxurious
Suits
media, fashion, architecture, food, hospitality, portfolio
Type
Playfair Display + Source Serif 4

Principles

  • Set every text block on a reading measure inset from the page edge; leave the outer columns as margins
  • Lead with a high-contrast serif display face; carry voice with italics, not colour
  • Open stories with a kicker, a headline, an italic dek and a byline — in that order
  • Break long text with pull quotes, drop caps and captioned photographs, never with cards or icons
  • Order with hairlines and double rules; one accent colour for kickers and drop caps only

Hard rules

  • No sans-serif display headlines; no bold serif headlines.
  • No cards, rounded corners, shadows or gradients.
  • No icon rows, feature grids with icons, or badge pills.
  • No full-bleed text: running text never spans more than 8 columns.
  • No centred body text; only the masthead nameplate may be centred.
  • No text over photographs; captions sit beside or below.

Full page preview with sample copy, rendered from the same tokens and layout the agent receives.

For coding agents

Rules and live patterns

Every pattern Editorial Magazine owns, drawn by the same renderer as the picker with the style's default tokens and sample copy. Each has an anchor (#<pattern id>). A design's own DESIGN.md and tokens.json stay the source of truth; this page shows what the patterns look like.

Do

  • Set running text on the inset measure given by the spans (usually 3–8 or 2–10), 55–66 characters per line, in the serif body face at `tokens.base` (18 px) with 1.6 line height.
  • Set headlines in the display serif at weight 400 (never bold), tight leading; use italic for decks, pull quotes and the second voice.
  • Open every story block with kicker → headline → italic dek → byline, in that order.
  • Start the first paragraph of a story with a drop cap three lines deep in the display serif and the accent colour.
  • Give every photograph a caption in small italic type outside the image.
  • Use the accent colour only for kickers, drop caps, the issue numeral and the pull-quote rule.
  • Separate stories with hairlines and open major sections with a double rule (4 px + 1 px).
  • Set kickers, bylines and nav links in the body sans or serif in small uppercase with wide tracking.
  • At 375 px keep 20 px side margins and the drop cap; set hero headlines at step 3–4 so no word breaks.

Don't

  • No sans-serif display headlines; no bold serif headlines.
  • No cards, rounded corners, shadows or gradients.
  • No icon rows, feature grids with icons, or badge pills.
  • No full-bleed text: running text never spans more than 8 columns.
  • No centred body text; only the masthead nameplate may be centred.
  • No text over photographs; captions sit beside or below.
  • No more than one accent colour, and never as a background fill for large areas.
  • No carousels or auto-playing media in story blocks.

Feature opener

hero.editorial-magazine-feature-opener · hero

Rule
A 21:9 photograph across the full grid with a caption; below it the kicker on 2–4, a serif headline at step 6 on 2–11, an italic dek on 2–8 and the byline.
Slots
heroImage, eyebrow, headline, subhead, author, meta
Grid
image 1-12 · kicker 2-4 · headline 2-10 · dek 2-8 · byline 2-8
Notes
Like the first spread of a magazine feature. Column 1 stays empty under the image so the text block is inset from the photo's edge.

The photograph opens the hero: 21:9 across 1–12, full colour, with a small italic caption under its right edge. Below, everything hangs from column 2 (column 1 is the margin): the kicker in small uppercase tracked body face in the accent colour on 2–4; the headline in the display serif at step 6, weight 400, tight leading, max ~18 ch, on 2–11 (three to four lines at 1440 px); the dek (standfirst) in italic at lead size on 2–8; then the byline — "Words by …" in small uppercase and a muted date. At phone width the image stays first, the margin column collapses and the headline drops to step 3.

Notes
Use for publications, journals and studios with many stories. The issue numeral is the only accent.

Columns 1–5: the issue numeral at step 8 in the accent colour (italic serif), a small uppercase kicker ("Issue 14 — Autumn"), the headline at step 4 (max ~16 ch) and an italic dek. Columns 7–12: a table of contents of four to six entries separated by hairlines; each entry is a 6-column row with its page number in italic serif on column 1 and, on 2–6, the section in small uppercase, the story title (h3) and a one-line dek. Column 6 stays empty. At phone width the contents follow the cover block.

Rule
Body text on the 3–8 measure with a drop cap; marginalia (photo with its caption) in 10–12; a pull quote breaks out to 2–9 between paragraphs.
Slots
sectionLabel, statement, image, body, quote, body2
Grid
label 3-8 · body 3-8 · margin 10-12 · pullQuote 2-9
Notes
The pull quote is wider than the measure on the left only — it breaks the column, not the page.

The reading column runs 3–8 (max ~62 ch). Order: section label (small uppercase), the first paragraph at lead size opening with a three-line drop cap, body paragraphs, then a pull quote in italic display serif at step 4 that breaks out of the measure to 2–9 with a 2 px accent rule above it, then more body. Marginalia sit in 10–12 beside the first paragraphs: a 4:5 photograph with one small caption (never repeat the caption as a second note). At phone width the marginalia follow the first paragraph.
